Verina Consulting Group LLC (VERINA) has started the first phase of a full-scale remedy at a site in Northern New Jersey. The site was a former specialty chemical manufacturing facility and its past operations have resulted in dense non-aqueous phase liquid (DNAPL), and impacted soils and groundwater by volatile chlorinated organic compounds including tetrachloroethylene (PCE), trichloroethylene (TCE), carbon tetrachloride, and their break daughter products, various Freon isomers and some semi-volatile organic compounds.
Following bench scale treatability tests and field pilot studies, in-situ chemical oxidation (ISCO) using high pH activated sodium persulfate is selected for the full-scale application to remediate the impacted groundwater at the site. During the first phase of full-scale implementation of the ISCO, a total of 115 injection wells were installed at site to distribute injection solute at an injection rate of less than two (2) gallon per minute (gpm) at each well. To accomplish this implementation, VERINA developed a customized injection trailer to be able to perform injections at 15 wells simultaneously for an anticipated three-month period.
Over the next couple months, several rounds of post injection groundwater monitoring will be conducted to evaluate the performance of ISCO in remediating the constituents of concern (COCs) at the site, and plan for additional ISCO events to achieve site closure.
